MiniBypass (MGB)

What is Mini Gastric Bypass

Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) — also known as One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) — is a widely performed bariatric surgery designed to help patients achieve significant and long-term weight loss. Like other types of weight loss surgery, MGB works by restricting the size of the stomach and reducing nutrient absorption, leading to lower calorie intake.

During the procedure, the stomach is reshaped into a small, tube-like pouch, and a section of the small intestine is bypassed. This means food passes directly from the new stomach pouch into a lower part of the small intestine, skipping around 200–250 cm (6.5–8 feet) of the digestive tract.

How is Mini Gastric Bypass Performed?

The surgery is carried out laparoscopically, using minimally invasive techniques with a few small incisions rather than open surgery. This approach results in:

  • Faster recovery time

  • Less post-operative pain

  • Reduced risk of infection

  • Minimal or no visible scarring

Why Is It Called “Mini” Gastric Bypass?

The term “Mini” does not mean the surgery is less effective. Instead, it refers to the fact that this procedure involves only one connection (anastomosis) between the stomach and small intestine, compared to two in the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.

This makes MGB:

  • Shorter in duration

  • Technically simpler for surgeons

  • More affordable compared to the traditional bypass

  • Highly effective, often combining the best features of Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Bypass

Why Patients Choose Mini Gastric Bypass

Patients often prefer MGB because it offers excellent weight loss results, a shorter operation time, and a lower cost compared to other bypass techniques, while still being highly effective in treating obesity and related health conditions.

Why Is Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?

Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) is primarily performed as a weight loss procedure for patients struggling with severe obesity and obesity-related health conditions. It is often recommended when diet and exercise alone are no longer effective, and a surgical solution becomes the safest and most effective option.

Key Reasons for Choosing Mini Gastric Bypass

  • Primary weight loss treatment: Helps patients with morbid obesity achieve significant and sustainable weight reduction.

  • Revisional surgery: Frequently chosen for patients who were unsuccessful with previous procedures such as Gastric Band or Gastric Sleeve.

  • Improves health conditions: MGB can help manage or improve several obesity-related illnesses, including:

    • Type 2 Diabetes

    • High blood pressure (hypertension)

    • High cholesterol

    • Sleep apnea

    • Cardiovascular risks

  • Laparoscopic approach: Like Gastric Sleeve, the surgery is performed laparoscopically through small keyhole incisions, which means less scarring, quicker recovery, and fewer complications.

Important Consideration: Acid Reflux

While Mini Gastric Bypass offers many benefits, it is not suitable for patients with acid reflux (GERD). In such cases, symptoms may worsen after surgery, and an alternative bariatric procedure may be recommended instead.

Why Is Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?

The decision on whether a patient qualifies for Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) is always made after a detailed evaluation by our specialist bariatric team. Each case is unique, and eligibility depends on medical history, test results, and overall health.

General Criteria for Mini Gastric Bypass

  • Body Mass Index (BMI):

    • A BMI of 35 or higher, or

    • A BMI of 30+ with obesity-related health conditions (such as diabetes or hypertension).

  • COVID-19 status: Patients must not have tested positive within the 30 days before surgery.

  • Infections: Surgery cannot be performed if the patient has an active infection at the time of the operation.

  • Acid reflux / Hiatal hernia: Patients with GERD caused by a hiatal hernia are not suitable candidates, as Mini Gastric Bypass may worsen reflux symptoms.

  • Chronic conditions: Diseases such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure may require additional medical testing before approval.

  • Lifestyle factors: Patients must stop smoking and alcohol consumption at least 6 months before surgery, as both can increase the risk of complications and affect long-term results.

Personalized Assessment

These are general guidelines, but the final decision is always made by the bariatric team after a full medical evaluation. Some patients may also need clearance from their own doctors before surgery in Turkey.
