What is Gastric Bypass (Roux en Y) Surgery?

Gastric Bypass surgery, also known as Roux-en-Y Bypass or Full Gastric Bypass, is one of the most established and widely performed bariatric procedures worldwide. It helps patients achieve lasting weight loss by:

  • Reducing stomach size – creating a small pouch that limits how much food can be eaten.

  • Bypassing part of the small intestine – reducing calorie and nutrient absorption

During the procedure, swallowed food moves directly from the newly created stomach pouch into the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach and around 150–200 cm (5–6.5 feet) of the small intestine.

The surgery is called Roux-en-Y because the new connections between the stomach and small intestine form a “Y” shape, which reroutes the digestive system effectively.

Why Is Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?

Obesity has become a global health challenge, reducing both life expectancy and quality of life. Gastric Bypass surgery is performed to treat obesity and the medical problems associated with it, especially when lifestyle changes like diet and exercise have failed.

This procedure not only helps patients lose a significant amount of weight, but also brings long-term improvements to obesity-related conditions, including:

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • High cholesterol

  • Sleep apnea

  • Heart disease

  • Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) – especially when caused by hiatal hernias

Like Gastric Sleeve, the procedure is done laparoscopically (using small keyhole incisions instead of open surgery), resulting in quicker recovery and lower risk of complications.

Who Qualifies for Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Eligibility for Roux-en-Y Bypass is carefully determined by our specialist bariatric team after reviewing each patient’s health and medical history. The general requirements include:

  • BMI requirement:

    • A BMI of 35 or higher, or

    • A BMI of 30+ with obesity-related health conditions (such as diabetes or hypertension).

  • No recent COVID-19: Patients must not have tested positive for COVID within the month before surgery.

  • No stomach polyps: Patients with polyps in the stomach are not suitable candidates.

  • No active infection: Surgery cannot proceed if an infection is present at the time of the procedure.

  • Chronic conditions: Conditions such as thyroid disease, Crohn’s disease, or diabetes may require extra testing before arriving in Turkey.

  • Medical clearance: Patients with a history of certain illnesses may need a doctor’s approval letter or additional consultations upon arrival.
